The announcement was made during the Goldman Sachs Communacopia + Technology Conference in San Francisco on September 8, 2026.

The tech giant is focusing on sectors such as chip design, life sciences, and financial services, catering to businesses that require AI systems tailored to specific tasks. OpenAI is also experimenting with pricing models based on business outcomes rather than usage, a response to enterprises demanding measurable returns on their AI investments.

OpenAI’s own experience in using its AI models for chip design has been notably successful. The company developed its Jalapeno chip which reached the tape-out stage—when a chip design is finalized and sent to a factory for production—within an impressive nine months. The push into industry-specific AI and competitive pricing reflects the growing competition OpenAI faces from Chinese open-weight models and rivals like Anthropic. Friar claimed that deploying OpenAI’s lower-cost model could be cheaper than running Chinese open-source alternatives through cloud providers. For instance, she compared the cost of deploying the Luna model to that of Z.ai’s GLM 5.3 on a cloud layer, asserting that OpenAI’s solution is more cost-effective.

“If you’re deploying Luna and compare that to GLM 5.3, for example, on a cloud layer, we are cheaper,” Friar said. This cost advantage is a significant factor for enterprises looking to optimize their AI investments.
