The New York Islanders have taken a monumental step in engaging their fanbase by unveiling eight finalists in their historic fan-designed jersey contest. This innovative initiative has captured the imagination of Isles Nation resulting in an overwhelming response of over 80,000 submissions. The contest, the first of its kind in National Hockey League history, aims to create the team’s official third jersey for the 2027-28 season.
Kelly Cheeseman, President of Business Operations for the Islanders and UBS Arena, expressed her awe at the fan participation: “Islanders fans have once again blown us away with their incredible creativity and the sheer volume of participation. Both the passion of our fans and their overwhelming support throughout this contest have been extraordinary.”
The journey from 80,000 submissions to eight finalists
The Islanders received an astonishing 80,490 submissions from fans eager to leave their mark on the team’s identity. A dedicated committee, including players and Hockey Operations, meticulously reviewed each design to narrow down the field to the final eight concepts. These finalists now face off in a bracket-style fan vote, a process that promises to be as thrilling as the games themselves.
The first round of voting, which began on August 12, pits designs with similar motifs against each other. Fans will choose between lighthouse logos on navy and orange sweaters, vintage fisherman logos on different colored jerseys, and variations of the team’s “NY” and “Islanders” logos. The voting schedule is as follows:
- Round 1 August 12 to August 14
- Semifinals August 15 to August 17
- Finals August 18 to August 20
The significance of fan engagement in sports
The Islanders’ fan-designed jersey contest is more than just a competition; it’s a testament to the power of fan engagement in sports. By involving the community in the design process, the team has fostered a deeper connection with its supporters. This initiative not only allows fans to express their creativity but also gives them a tangible stake in the team’s identity.
“Every step of this journey proves just how deeply invested Isles Nation is in the identity of this franchise,” Cheeseman noted. The contest has sparked excitement and anticipation among fans, who are eager to see their designs come to life on the ice. The winning designer will have the unique opportunity to be part of an extensive design process to develop the full jersey kit, further emphasizing the collaborative nature of this project.
The impact on the team’s future
The fan-designed jersey contest comes at a pivotal time for the Islanders. After missing the playoffs for a second straight year in the 2026-26 season, the team is looking to reignite its passion and connect with its fanbase. The contest has provided a positive distraction and a sense of hope for the future. With rookie defenceman Matthew Schaefer taking home the Calder Trophy as the NHL’s top rookie, the team is building momentum and looking ahead to the 2027-28 season.
As the voting progresses, the anticipation builds for the unveiling of the winning design. The fan-designed jersey will not only be a symbol of the team’s identity but also a testament to the power of community and creativity. The Islanders have set a new standard for fan engagement, and the impact of this contest will be felt for years to come.
