In the heart of San Francisco’s SoMa neighborhood stands a unique residence that has undergone a remarkable transformation. Originally built over a century ago, this three-level structure has evolved from a historic home to a futuristic sanctuary, inspired by the worlds of Star Trek and Dune. The journey of this 5,000-square-foot, five-bedroom home is a testament to the power of visionary design and innovative thinking.
The current owners, a young couple, envisioned a space that respected the home’s rich history while infusing it with a modern and timeless aesthetic. They enlisted the expertise of designer Christine Lin from the design firm Form + Field to bring their vision to life. Lin, known for her creative approach, saw the potential in the property despite its unconventional sci-fi theme. “You don’t normally find properties like this in San Francisco,” Lin remarked, highlighting the uniqueness of the project.
The Fusion of History and Futurism
The home’s original interior architecture, featuring a large skylight and a mezzanine overlooking the kitchen, provided a solid foundation for the transformation. Lin strategically refined the materials and added functional elements such as a nursery, an office, and a storage-filled laundry and changing room. “The original design had lots of bold color, metal, and other hard finishes, so we brought in warm counterpoints like maple cabinetry and flooring,” Lin explained. The goal was to create a harmonious blend of the home’s historic charm and futuristic inspiration.
Each space in the home makes a unique statement, beginning with the airlock-inspired entry. The original metal door and porthole windows remain, but Lin introduced a gradient wallpaper that recalls the stratosphere, creating an ethereal feel. The primary bedroom, inspired by Dune features a custom bed and a sandy shade of limewash on the walls, evoking the subterranean villages of the iconic sci-fi universe. The primary bath, with its travertine surfaces and limewash walls, offers a serene and luxurious retreat.
Innovative Design Elements
The double-height kitchen and dining area serve as the heart of the home, conceived as a space station atrium. The original cabinetry and island have been updated with cool silver accents and biodegradable linoleum flooring. Lin added a wall of maple and stainless steel cabinetry to maximize storage, complete with a coffee bar. A woven painting by Margo Wolowiec acts as a “window looking back to Earth,” adding a touch of artistic flair to the space.
Another bedroom offers a completely different experience, featuring an Art Nouveau language and a botanical wallpaper from Little Greene. This guest suite, with its rich textures and warm tones, embodies the couple’s desire for a “new Earth” concept. The husband’s office, equipped with a maple pegboard and a custom window bench, provides a functional and stylish workspace.
