Nestled beside the village square in Sa Cabaneta, a quaint town in Marratxí, Mallorca, stands Can Jordi, a historic house built in 1930. This three-storey residence, spanning 384 square metresis a testament to the island’s rich architectural heritage. With its exposed timber beams, stone walls, and handmade floor tiles, Can Jordi offers a glimpse into the past while embracing modern living.
The house, arranged around a central patio, features three bedrooms and three bathroomseach space telling a story of decades of occupation. Thick masonry walls, timber structures, and traditional finishes are preserved throughout, creating a harmonious blend of old and new.
The Art of Restoration: Preserving Tradition
Can Jordi is part of a broader initiative by Kalypso Projects to restore historic Mallorcan buildings. The project focuses on preserving traditional craftsmanship while adapting homes for contemporary living. The design practice has proposed a renovation plan that aims to update the house while retaining its defining character. Proposed interventions include reconfigured living spaces, restored architectural details, and a new courtyard swimming pool enclosed by warm-toned rendered walls.
The central patio, enclosed by the surrounding rooms, forms a private outdoor space at the heart of the house. This design element not only enhances the aesthetic appeal but also provides a serene retreat within the bustling village. Located a short walk from local shops and cafés, Can Jordi remains closely tied to the vibrant life of Sa Cabaneta.
Modern Comforts in a Historic Setting
The restoration project seeks to create a seamless blend of historic charm and modern comfort. The proposed interventions are designed to enhance the functionality of the space without compromising its traditional appeal. The reconfigured living spaces aim to provide a more open and inviting atmosphere, while the restored architectural details highlight the house’s unique character.
The addition of a courtyard swimming pool offers a luxurious touch, creating a private oasis within the heart of the house. The warm-toned rendered walls surrounding the pool area complement the existing stone walls, maintaining a cohesive aesthetic throughout the property. This thoughtful design ensures that the house remains a timeless gem, cherished for generations to come.
Can Jordi stands as a testament to the beauty of historic preservation and the art of blending the old with the new. Its restoration not only honors the past but also embraces the future, creating a living space that is both functional and inspiring.
