Discover Espolòn's New Extra Añejo Tequila Aged in Chardonnay Casks

Espolòn Tequila, a brand known for its commitment to quality and innovation, has launched a new Extra Añejo expression that pushes the boundaries of traditional tequila aging. This latest addition to the Espolòn portfolio is the result of a meticulous three-year aging process that incorporates both American oak and French Chardonnay casks, creating a tequila with a unique and complex flavor profile.

The new Espolòn Extra Añejo is a testament to the brand’s dedication to artisanal craftsmanship and modern innovation. Founded in 1998 by master distiller Cirilo Oropeza, Espolòn has always been at the forefront of tequila production, blending traditional Mexican techniques with contemporary methods. The brand’s current master distiller, Jesús Susunaga Acosta, continues this legacy by experimenting with innovative aging processes that enhance the tequila’s natural flavors.

The Art of Double-Cask Aging

The Espolòn Extra Añejo undergoes a distinctive double-cask aging process that sets it apart from other tequilas. The tequila spends its first two and a half years aging in American oak barrels, which impart rich notes of caramel and vanilla. For the final six months, the tequila is transferred to French Chardonnay casks, adding layers of complexity and a smooth, approachable finish.

“With Extra Añejo, we wanted to push the character of our flavor profile while staying true to what makes Espolòn unmistakably itself,” said Acosta. “The double-cask approach adds new layers of flavor, and the Chardonnay finish introduces an unexpected layer of complexity that balances the caramel and vanilla notes with toasted oak and sweet spice.”

A Tribute to Mexican Culture

Espolòn’s commitment to Mexican culture is evident in every aspect of its tequila, from the production process to the striking bottle designs. The Extra Añejo’s matte-black bottle features neon green lettering and a label inspired by the work of Mexican artist José Guadalupe Posada. The label depicts “The Serenata,” a traditional Mexican custom of serenading a loved one, symbolizing the brand’s belief in the power of music and romance.

At the San Nicolas distillery (NOM1440) in the Los Altos region of Jalisco, Espolòn takes the idea of serenading literally. During fermentation, classical music is played to help activate the yeast, creating a unique environment that shapes the tequila’s character before it reaches the barrel. This attention to detail reflects Espolòn’s approach to tequila: uncompromising quality meant to be enjoyed.

An Accessible Luxury

Unlike many Extra Añejos that are reserved for special occasions or serious collectors, Espolòn Extra Añejo is designed to be accessible to a wider audience. The brand believes that quality tequila should not be limited to exclusive events but should be enjoyed by everyone who appreciates a well-crafted spirit.

“We wanted to create a tequila that can stand alongside aged spirits while remaining accessible for more people to experience,” said Acosta. “Extra Añejo offers depth and character without pretense, making it a compelling alternative to traditional whiskey or Scotch gifts.”

The Espolòn Extra Añejo is now available at select retailers nationwide in the U.S. and on the Espolòn Tequila website for delivery in select markets. With an MSRP of $69.99 for a 750mL bottle, it offers an affordable luxury that can be enjoyed neat, on the rocks, or in the signature Espolòn Old Fashioned.

Espolòn Tequila encourages responsible enjoyment of its products, reminding adults 21 and up to savor the Extra Añejo without the need for fancy glasses or complex tasting rituals. The brand’s focus on accessibility and quality makes it a standout choice in the tequila market.
