In the heart of the Welsh countryside, a couple’s dream has become a reality, as they have spent seven years and £500,000 creating a Hobbit holiday village inspired by J.R.R. Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings.
Phil and Sam Kilv, lifelong fans of the fantasy series, have meticulously crafted three underground dwellings near the Cambrian Mountains offering a unique retreat for guests seeking a magical experience.
The creation of a magical retreat
The Kilvs’ journey began over two decades ago when they moved to their current home. Phil, a classic motorbike restorer, and Sam, a marketing professional, shared a passion for Tolkien’s works, which they read to their children. This shared love inspired them to create themed holiday accommodations.
After transforming an old cow shed into a pirate-themed inn complete with real sand and handmade skulls, the couple turned their attention to Middle-earth. They enlisted the help of local blacksmiths and craftsmen to create authentic details, such as bespoke bed frames and outdoor thrones.
Immersive Hobbit experiences
The first property, Pen y Bag opened in August and is themed around the year 1601 of the Third Age, marking the beginning of the Shire Reckoning. This two-bedroom cottage features curved architecture, a log burner, and two bespoke four-poster king-size beds, accommodating up to four guests.
The other two one-bedroom homes, Rhiw Ty’r Maes and Crucywel are due to open later this year. Each cottage offers a blend of fantasy décor and modern comforts, including Smart TVs, Wi-Fi, underfloor heating, and walk-in showers. Guests can immerse themselves in the magical realm of a Hobbit while enjoying contemporary amenities.
A unique holiday destination
The Kilvs’ 24-acre site, Coed Y Ddraig near Tregaron, promises a tranquil and enchanting experience for couples and visitors seeking a unique getaway. The adult-only retreats are nestled within beautiful woodland, offering stunning views of the rolling hills of Ceredigion.
Phil and Sam hope that their creation will captivate Lord of the Rings fans as much as it has captivated them. With stays starting from around £180 a night, guests can indulge in a fantasy experience like no other, surrounded by the breathtaking Welsh landscape and rich folklore.
