The Tubet has reopened, inviting the public to engage with the inspiring story of ps Magdeleine. This space, dedicated to her memory, will be inaugurated on November 13, presenting an opportunity to explore her life and spirituality. Recognizing her influence and understanding the essence of her spiritual journey are crucial
within this commemorative environment.
Throughout its history, the Tubet has served as a refuge for numerous Little Sisters and various groups seeking solace and renewal. As I examine the contents of her personal space, I uncover a wealth of artifacts that tell the story of ps Magdeleine’s life and legacy. Each item carries significance, reflecting her past and the profound impact she had on those around her.
Artifacts of a resilient spirit
One notable item is a medical doctor’s briefcase, a relic that evokes memories of ps Magdeleine’s father, Mr. Hutin. He played a pivotal role in nurturing her passion for Africa and the Arab world. After several relocations, the Hutin family settled in Aix-en-Provence in 1914, just as the specter of war loomed, bringing grief and hardship.
Following her father’s passing when she was only twenty-seven, ps Magdeleine faced the formidable challenge of caring
for her mother while navigating the trials and injustices of her time. Each item I encounter reflects a period of immense strength and the enduring dreams that flourished in her heart.
Artistry and compassion
Among the treasures, I find two tambourines adorned with soft hues. These instruments serve a purpose beyond decoration; they symbolize her artistic talent and commitment to charity events in Nantes. During this period, she held the position of director at the School of the Sisters of the Sacred Heart for eight years. Sensitive to the struggles of her community, she initiated a popular school for girls from working-class families.
To support this initiative, she created handcrafted items for sale; now, these historical pieces are before me. During this time, she eagerly anticipated her journey to Algeria, inspired by the footsteps of Charles de Foucauld. From 1921 onward, her vision of dedicating her life to God in the Sahara Desert grew increasingly vivid.
Journey to Algeria and beyond
As I continue to catalog and reflect on the items, I come across several lamps intended for use in the desert. These artifacts recount the story of the first fraternity established in a small oasis in the Algerian Sahara, where nomads gathered around a well to quench their animals’ thirst. During that era in Touggourt, the absence of electricity made these lamps essential.
In 1936, ps Magdeleine embarked on her journey to Algeria, accompanied by a companion who shared her ambitions. On September 8, 1939, shortly after the outbreak of World War II, she made her vows and founded the Little Sisters of Jesus Fraternity, dedicated to serving the nomadic populations of Algeria. While her vision began to take shape, the path ahead was fraught with challenges.
Spreading love and solidarity
Unbeknownst to her, ps Magdeleine’s message of love and compassion would resonate globally. The objects surrounding me testify to her desire to transcend cultural and linguistic barriers. Her powerful words echo: ‘I wish to ignite a spark of love in every corner of the world.’ A simple spark can ignite great fires, making her dream of creating beacons of love worldwide increasingly tangible.
As I near the completion of this exhibition setup, I feel a profound sense of joy, envisioning the many individuals who will enter the Tubet and be inspired by these testaments of love and dedication. Ps Magdeleine envisioned the Tubet as a vibrant space for gathering and joy; through our efforts, we are realizing this beautiful dream.
