The VLE’s design is a study in contrasts. On the surface, it retains the fundamental shape of a van, which may not immediately appeal to those seeking a traditional luxury vehicle. However, Mercedes-Benz has added several stylish touches to elevate its appearance. The available 22-inch Monoblock wheels add a touch of elegance, while the detailing around the grille and star-shaped headlights reinforce the family connection to other Mercedes-Benz models.

Interior Comfort and Technology
Step inside the VLE, and you’ll find a cabin that exudes luxury, especially in the Exclusive Package trim. The front seats are spacious and comfortable, with ample padding and climate control features. The high seating position offers good visibility, though the seats do not recline as far as one might expect.
The second row can be configured with either a three-seat bench or a pair of captain’s chairs, depending on the market. Our test van featured the top-shelf Grand Comfort Seat setup, which offers a business-class level of comfort. However, accessing these seats can be a bit awkward due to fixed armrests on both sides.
One of the standout features of the VLE is the 31.3-inch 8K ultra-widescreen display that swings down from the ceiling. This entertainment system supports apps like Disney+ and YouTube, and includes an HDMI input for additional content. The audio experience is enhanced by a 22-speaker Burmester 3D sound system with Dolby Atmos support, which adapts to the number of passengers in the vehicle.
Second-row passengers also enjoy amenities like a fold-out table and a refrigerated compartment for refreshments. The third row, while not as comfortable as the front two rows, offers ample headroom and legroom for taller individuals. With the seats removed, the VLE provides up to 152 cubic feet of cargo space, making it ideal for various hauling needs.
Performance and Efficiency
The VLE is available with either front- or all-wheel drive, with the North American market expected to receive a dual-motor, all-wheel-drive VLE 400 4MATIC with 416 hp. The battery pack, situated in the floor, has a usable capacity of 115 kWh providing a range of up to 435 miles on the European WLTP testing cycle. While the American EPA rating is yet to be determined, it is expected to be north of 350 miles.
The VLE rides on a custom air-suspension setup with bespoke rear shocks that tuck in on either side of the rear motor, maintaining a flat floor and maximizing cargo space. The air suspension allows the VLE to raise or lower itself by 40 mm enhancing both aerodynamics and ease of entry and exit.
For tight maneuvers, the VLE’s rear wheels can turn opposite the front by up to seven degrees, giving it a turning radius comparable to a Honda Civic. At higher speeds, the rear wheels align with the front, boosting stability.
Driving Experience
Behind the wheel, the VLE offers a smooth and comfortable ride, thanks to its air suspension and new chassis design. The vehicle glides over speed bumps and rough roads with the characteristic elegance of a Mercedes-Benz. While it can be dialed into Sport mode for a more dynamic driving experience, the VLE truly shines in Comfort mode, where it excels in wafting around with ease.
The throttle and brake pedals have a long, relaxed travel, and the steering is equally slow, making the VLE easy to drive in a confident and calm manner. This smoothness translates into an excellent passenger experience, with four climate zones allowing passengers to customize their comfort.
Is the VLE Worth It?
Determining the value of the VLE is challenging, as Mercedes-Benz has not yet committed to a price. The VLE’s unique combination of spaciousness and luxury appointments sets it apart from other vehicles in the market. However, its design may not immediately appeal to those accustomed to more traditional luxury SUVs.
Will the VLE kick off a new wave of tall, long grand limousines in the American market? While other brands have seen success with this template in Asia, it remains to be seen whether Americans will embrace this new segment.
