Explore the Stunning Sag Harbor Home of Photographer Jonas Fredwall Karlsson

Swedish photographer Jonas Fredwall Karlsson renowned for his work with Vanity Fair over two decades, has decided to part with his meticulously restored Sag Harbor retreat. Known as a visual mastermind Karlsson’s lens has captured everything from the bustling streets of Timbuktu to the serene landscapes of Utah where he photographed the late Robert Redford at his estate. Now, his attention to detail is evident in the restoration of this historic home.

Acquired in 2017 for $3.1 million, the property is now on the market for just under $9.3 million. The listing, held by Erica Grossman of Douglas Elliman and Lori MacGarva of William Raveis includes approved plans to expand the main home by approximately 1,500 square feet, along with the addition of a studio and a pool house totaling about 785 square feet.

The Historic Charm of Sag Harbor

The Gothic Victorian home, originally built in 1882, sits on nearly half an acre shaded by a massive oak tree. Its white wood exterior features a dramatic turret, multiple gables, deep eaves, and oversized windows. The current layout spans 2,500 square feet across two levels, with three bedrooms, four full bathrooms, and a powder room, all accented by refinished wide-plank white oak flooring.

An entry foyer with a curving traditional staircase leads to a den lined with built-in bookshelves and an adjacent living room featuring the home’s original wood-burning fireplace. The newly renovated galley kitchen boasts shaker-style cabinetry, a glossy subway tile backsplash, and a cozy breakfast nook with French doors opening to a screened-in porch. A bay-windowed dining room adds to the home’s charm.

Outdoor Oasis

Outdoors, the grassy grounds are anchored by a 45-foot-by-12-foot heated gunite swimming pool, creating a private oasis just steps from the heart of the village. The property also includes a gated motor court and a detached garage, adding to its appeal.

All of the en suite bedrooms are located upstairs, including a primary retreat boasting a walk-in closet and a marble-tiled bath with dual pedestal sinks and a freestanding soaking tub. The home’s proximity to Sag Harbor Cove provides easy access to water activities, making it a perfect retreat for those seeking both tranquility and adventure.

A New Chapter

Karlsson has decided to sell the property as his family has moved from the area. “Maybe in the future I’ll buy something here again,” he added. “That’s very possible.” In the meantime, he plans to spend more time at his residence in Stockholm and will continue visiting New York for work.

The sale of this historic home marks the end of an era for Karlsson in Sag Harbor, but the property’s rich history and meticulous restoration ensure it will continue to be a cherished retreat for its next owner.
