Complete guide to parking and passes in Val di Cornia parks

A clear overview of parking options, camper facilities, tariff rules and how to obtain the digital parking pass for Val di Cornia parks

The Val di Cornia parks cover a mix of coastline, archaeological sites and recreational zones, and their parking network is designed to serve different types of visitors. This guide summarizes where to leave your vehicle, how many spaces are available, which rules apply during busy times and

what services are offered for caravans and visitors with special needs. It also explains payment options, subscription choices and the steps to request the new digital parking pass, useful whether you are visiting the Parco archeologico di Baratti e Populonia or the beaches of the Parco Costiero della Sterpaia.

Throughout the territory there are both free and paid lots, dedicated visitor areas and fully equipped camper

spaces. In peak seasons some access points are subject to special controls to protect the environment: for example, vehicles wider than 2 metres are not allowed inside the inner zone of the Golfo di Baratti. Below you will find organized sections with capacities, rules for buses, service availability and the most up-to-date tariff information.

Parking locations and capacities

Casone parking and nearby areas serve the archaeological

visitors with a reserved visitor zone that holds around 100 cars and 6 buses; visitors must present their entrance ticket at the ticket office to validate the parking authorization on exit. In addition to this reserved sector there are roughly 60 paid spaces adjacent to the site. At Populonia Alta there is a private paid lot reserved for cars that supports access to the necropolis and acropolis; buses must display the authorization obtained during booking.

Golfo di Baratti

The parking layout at the Golfo di Baratti is mainly oriented toward cars, though the Caldanelle lot provides capacity for 70 caravans and motorhomes and includes a dedicated service for water loading and unloading. Overall the Golfo area offers about 889 car spaces, 94 camper spots, 48 motorcycle places and 15 disabled bays. Remember that, during selected high-traffic periods, an ordinance from the Municipality of Piombino restricts access for vehicles exceeding 2 metres in width to protect the inner coastal zone.

Parco Costiero della Sterpaia and camper facilities

The eastern coast near Piombino is served by an extensive paid parking system. The Parco della Sterpaia includes approximately 4,089 car places, 298 camper spaces, 136 motorcycle bays and 75 disabled spots. Several lots are specifically equipped for recreational vehicles with points for water service and waste disposal; notable examples are the Carbonifera 1 and the Caldanelle areas, which operate 24/24 during the days the parking areas are open.

Rates, schedules and how to pay

Paid parking operates within fixed seasonal windows: from 28 marzo al 4 ottobre 2026 from 08:00 to 20:00 as indicated in the municipal regulation. Hourly and daily rates vary by location: for example, one hour at Baratti is €2.90 whereas the eastern coast (Costa Est) charges about €1.45 for the first hour; daily rates generally approach €24.00 in Baratti and about €12.00 in the Costa Est for a 10-hour span and beyond. Camper tariffs may begin at roughly €3.20/hour in Caldanelle and can rise to €26.50 for prolonged parking. Parcometers accept coins, payment cards and contactless methods and payments are also supported by apps such as EasyPark, MooneyGo and bMove.

Subscriptions, passes and discounts

The area offers a variety of subscription options, including the Parking Pass. Non-residents can buy a weekly pass for cars at €50.00. Residents of the Val di Cornia can obtain a prepaid card valid for all of 2026 for €50.00 per car or €100.00 per camper, with the caveat that recreational vehicles have a one-week validity limit. Owners of accommodation, second-home holders and boat berth tenants may request specific abonements by sending documentation to the designated address or e-mail.

Digital pass, points of sale and practical services

From this season the authorizations are issued in electronic form only: the Parking Pass digital is linked to vehicle license plates and controls are performed by plate verification. Applications are submitted via muvin.it, where you register, select the pass type and upload requested documents. The back office processes requests and will reply within four working days; a digital signature is required before payment, which can be made only with a credit card. Required documentation includes the holder’s tax code for invoicing purposes.

Points of sale, shuttle and contacts

Alongside the online channel, seasonal sales desks operate at selected locations (for April and May 2026 these include the Museo Archeologico di Piombino, the Conad in via Lerario and tourist information offices in Baratti, Riotorto and Suvereto). A summer shuttle (Autolinee Toscane line 15E) links Caldanelle parking with the archaeological park and Populonia; parking at Caldanelle and the shuttle service are free during specified periods. Bus tickets can be purchased with the contactless tiptap system. For maintenance, information and reports contact Parchi Val di Cornia SpA at 0565 261142 or by e-mail at [email protected]. Violations of parking rules are sanctioned according to municipal regulations and the Highway Code.
