Betty Idol Charged in $200,000 Volusia County Real Estate Fraud Scheme

In a dramatic turn of events, Salomes Rengifo Jackson known by her stage name Betty Idol has been arrested in connection with a real estate fraud scheme that unfolded in Volusia County. The 40-year-old reality TV personality best known for her role in Love & Hip Hop: Atlanta is accused of orchestrating a complex scam that defrauded victims of nearly $200,000.

The arrest followed a nearly year-long investigation by the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office which began after victims reported the fraudulent activity in September 2026. The scheme involved a vacant parcel in Orange City where the identities of the legitimate owners were fraudulently used to make the property appear for sale.

The Intricate Web of Deception

The investigation revealed a sophisticated network of fraudulent activities. Victims were lured into wiring $196,786.65 to what appeared to be a legitimate escrow/title account connected to Old Republic Title. However, detectives discovered that the escrow setup was not legitimate and was tied to identity theft.

Investigators traced the funds through multiple bank accounts, some of which were allegedly opened using stolen identities. The affidavit states that Jackson exercised direct control over the accounts used to receive, transfer, and spend the stolen money. Approximately $178,786.65 of the stolen funds were personally received by Jackson.

The Unraveling of the Scheme

The victims initially made a $2,000 deposit to an escrow officer and received a confirmation email before completing the wire transfer for the remaining amount. However, after the transfer, they found it difficult to reach the escrow officer and realtor when they requested a survey of the property. The victims were told the realtor was out of the office and to stop calling.

Upon reaching out to the escrow company, the victims were informed that the officer they worked with was not employed by the company. The escrow company confirmed that they are aware of scammers using their business name. Investigators identified four key pieces of evidence indicating the incident was part of a coordinated real estate scam and money laundering activity.

The Role of Identity Theft

The scheme involved the fraudulent use of the property owner’s identity unauthorized posting of a For Sale sign and initiating a property sale without the owner’s knowledge. The victims were contacted by individuals claiming to be the property owners, who provided necessary paperwork to list the land for sale. However, the license and driver’s license provided were found to be fake.

The Legal Consequences

Jackson is facing several serious charges, including money launderinggrand theftorganized scheme to defraud and using another person’s ID without consent. She is currently held on a $275,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in court.

The arrest of Betty Idol has brought much-needed attention to the vulnerabilities in the real estate market and the need for tighter regulations and better consumer education. As the legal proceedings continue, the case serves as a stark reminder of the complexities and risks associated with property transactions.
